Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness is a very common complaint amongst patients that seek chiropractic treatment. It is a very broad term for symptoms ranging from lightheadedness to a disabling loss of balance or spinning feeling leading to nausea, sweating and vomiting in some cases. Some cases dizziness will go away in a short period of time and other cases is more chronic.

Lightheadedness is often described as faint feelings that caused by a decrease in blood supply to the brain and is common in people with low blood pressure. When moving from a lying position to an upright position it is common for a drop in blood pressure and blood flow to the head. This is known as orthostatic hypotension and results in light headed feelings. Those with anemia, dehydration, the flu or anxiety are more susceptible to experiencing lightheadedness. Spinning feelings are not a symptom of lightheadedness but of a condition known as Vertigo.

Recent research shows around 20% of all complaints of dizziness are caused by Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is an inner ear condition that causes quick vertigo (feelings of dizziness or spinning) episodes because of a dislodgement of calcium carbonate crystals that irritate fluid in the inner ear. The cause for BPPV can range from head injuries, viruses, ageing and minor strokes, which puts the older generation at more risk of BPPV. In older adults BPPV makes up half of the dizziness complaints. Change in head position triggers a BPPV episode, for example getting out of bed after sleeping in the same position all night. Chiropractors are able to diagnose the causes of dizziness during an exam and from there can choose the appropriate treatment for each individual situation. Manual techniques can be used to move the calcium carbonate crystals from rubbing and causing symptoms of vertigo.
