Whiplash Symptoms and Treatment

What is Whiplash?

One of the most common consequences of injury to the neck is whiplash, or neck
strain/sprain. It is caused by extreme, sudden backwards (hyperextension) or
forwards (hyperflexion) motion of the neck, usually as a result of an auto accident
or other trauma such as a skiing fall or falling off a horse. Whiplash is composed of
many different symptoms that are the result of damage to the discs, the ligaments
of the spine, the nerve roots, the muscles of the neck and the joints between the
vertebrae (bones of the spine).

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

The symptoms of whiplash most often develop within the first 24-48 hours following
the accident, but often times can also come weeks to months after.
