How fast do nerves grow back?

How Long Does it Take for Nerves to Grow Back?

Do you ever wonder why cold and frostbit fingers stay numb for days...and sometimes even weeks?  How long does it take for nerves in your body to grow back?  Neuroregeneration is the term used for nerve regrowth or repair after damage or injury, and grows in the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the spinal cord) at a rate of 1-2mm/day!  This is why frostbite on your big toe can cause your toe to be numb for over a week if the nerve damage was more than 1cm deep.

In another case, lets take a look at sciatic nerve pain.  With the sciatic nerve being nearly 3 feet long in the average adult, it is no wonder why it takes a while to treat and alleviate sciatic nerve pain.  As in most injuries in the human body, the longer that the injury exists, the less likely it is to heal fully and have normal function again. This is why it is a very good idea to visit a chiropractor (spine and nerve doctor) or neurologist (nerve specialist) if you are experiencing nerve damage or symptoms.

Symptoms of nerve damage include:

  • Muscle Weakness
  • Muscle Atrophy
  • Twitching or muscle fasciculations
  • Paralysis
  • Pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Burning
  • Other sensations or alterations in
    motor, sensory, or autonomic nerves.

Every day that passes that you have damage to a nerve, it will be harder and harder for the nerve to return to its original structure and function.  Make sure that you get checked out as soon as possible with any nerve damage and call our amazing doctors with any questions you may have regarding nerve injuries.
