Tips to Help Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis affects 10 million Americans and is a great contributor to spinal pain especially as we get older. It is also a common complaint we at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic see in our chiropractic clinic often. What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a bone disorder that compromises the density of bone, which in turn allows a much greater chance of fracture and instability in the spine. Studies show that about 40 percent of women over 50 years old will deal with osteoporosis related bone fractures in their lifetime.  This is a frightening study, but it doesn't have to be as scary as it looks.  Here are some tips for you to help increase the health in your bones and decrease your chance of osteoporosis.

  • Get Adjusted: First off maintaining a healthy spine and a balanced nervous system allow your spine to move optimally and maintain equal balance and pressure between each your vertebrae. Also, the stressful state your body is in when it is in pain creates an acidic environment which causes a decrease in calcium, which is an essential nutrient for your body's skeletal system.
  • Exercise: The way bone grows is through weight baring stress also known as Wolfes Law. Hence why astronauts have to incorporate resistance exercise, because their bone mineral density would decrease due to no gravity putting stress on their bones. Specific weight training exercises can help build bone and prevents them from weakening.  Make sure you consult with your health care physician such as a chiropractor or physical therapist to make sure your exercise is performed properly and free from potential injury.
  • Eating right: Eating healthy and getting a balanced diet with help directly with the nutrition of your bones.  Remember, what you eat is what you are!

  • Staying hydrated: dehydration can cause an acidic environment in the body which takes calcium out of the bones.

  • Supplements: Calcium is a very important supplement and is essential in the growth and maintenance of bone. Calcium absorption is also not utilized unless there is adequate Vitamin D in the body as well. Other supplements that help with bone growth and health are magnesium, boron, copper, zinc, and silica.
