Scoliosis and Chiropractic

Scoliosis is an abnormal side-to side curvature of the spine, and a very common condition seen and treated by chiropractors. The curves are either shaped like an S or a C. This can be caused by problems that were present at birth called a congenital condition, or idiopathic condition which is from an unknown cause. Sometimes, scoliosis is caused from a neuromuscular condition such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or spinal muscular atrophy. Many cases of scoliosis are mild to moderate, however severe scoliosis can cause disabling symptoms.

Signs and symptoms of scoliosis include:

  • Uneven shoulders

  • Uneven waist

  • Uneven hips

  • One shoulder blade that is more prominent than the other

  • One side of rib cage appears higher than the other

  • Difficulty walking

  • Back pain

  • Difficulty breathing

Chiropractic treatment has been instrumental in the treatment of scoliosis for many years. Chiropractic adjustments combined with exercise and therapies have been advocated in treating patients with scoliosis. Chiropractic adjustments can relieve pressure on the spine and nerves and help to reshape the spine and slightly alleviate or cure pain associated with scoliosis. Call your Bozeman Chiropractors, Dr. Dustin Rising or Dr. Rachel Rising to get your spine checked to see if you have scoliosis, or to get your condition treated today!
