Vertigo and Dizziness

Vertigo is a balance disorder which causes a sensation that you're spinning or the inside of your head is spinning. Specific positions of your head can trigger vertigo such as moving your head up and down, turning over, sitting up, or lying down in bed. An person usually has difficulty maintaining orientation when balance is impaired. Symptoms of vertigo can come and go, with symptoms typically lasting only a min or two. Signs and symptoms of vertigo may include:

  • Dizziness

  • Loss of balance

  • Nausea

  • Unsteadiness

  • Lightheadedness

  • A sense that you or your surroundings are spinning

  • Blurred vision

Causes of vertigo may be caused from disturbances in pathways in the nervous system or infections of the inner ear. Your inner ear contains an organ called the vestibular labyrinth. The labyrinth contains semicircular canals that have fine hair-like sensors that monitor the rotation of your head. There are also other structures in the ear that monitor movements of your head called otolith organs. Listed below are the four areas of potential causes of a balance disorder:

  • A disturbance in the labyrinth of the inner ear which helps control balance

  • Problem with proprioceptors in the spine which relay to the brain your body's positioning

  • Problems with the head and brain such as trauma

  • Blood flow problems such as stroke, blood clots, low blood pressure.

There are various options for treating balance disorders such as vertigo. Specific exercises that target the vestibulocochlear system can be effective in treating vertigo such as Epley's Manuever by a Chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment is also a reliable option in treating certain types of vertigo and can cure misalignments causing improper proprioceptive input (receptors for balance). Chiropractic adjustments can naturally correct confused communication between the brain and the body by allowing the nervous system to function more efficiently.

Vertigo can be due to serious illness or injury in certain cases so make sure you get checked out by your chiropractic physician as soon as possible.
