Time for a new Pillow?

Is it Time for a New Pillow?

It is standard recommendations to change your pillow every other year, two years in-between max. At two years. The reason for this is because your pillow will slowly lose it's cushion, slowly becoming more and more flat.

Now that you are considering your next pillow purchase, there are some things to consider.

How do you Sleep?

If you are a side or back sleeper, proper neck support can help with neck pain and/or headaches. Finding a contoured pillow that provides neck support for the curve of your neck, while allowing your head to be in line with your body is ideal. A pillow that lifts your head and does not support your neck is not allowing your body to rest in a position of misalignment.  If your mattress is soft, it may be best to get a thinner pillow as you will sink into the soft mattress; whereas, if your mattress is very firm a thicker pillow may be more appropriate.

A very thin pillow may be the right choice if you are a belly sleeper. While belly sleeping provides a lot of spinal torsion and is not recommended, comfort and a good night sleep are important. It is also recommended that you place a pillow underneath the chest and hips to avoid extension in the neck and decreases the curvature in the low back.

Sleep is vital to health and healing.  Considering your pillow, it really comes down to what you find comfortable and allows you to get the appropriate amount of sleep.

Other Pillow Considerations:

  1. Side sleepers should put a pillow between their knees to reduce low back tension and consider sleeping with a third larger pillow that is “hugged” to reduce thoracic/rib cage compression.
  2. Back sleepers with low back pain may benefit from a pillow under their knees; a slight bend in the knees may take pressure off of the spine and pelvis.

If you have questions about your pillow, your sleeping posture or how they may contribute to the symptoms that you are experiencing, talk to your doctors at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic.
