Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractic Techniques

There are over 100 named chiropractic techniques.  Most build on the foundation laid by other techniques and are then renamed by the doctor that developed the new technique. Some techniques have a reputation for being very forceful while others employ a non-touch strategy. Some use imaging or devices to determine diagnosis or spinal segments for adjusting, others employ orthopedic testing and hands on palpation. The intentions of most chiropractic techniques are to restore healthy joint motion and alignment, thereby effecting nerve conduction, circulation and muscle responses. Many techniques have a distinct protocol for diagnosis and treatment; though, many doctors mix techniques based on patients' needs.

At Gallatin Valley Chiropractic, we employ several chiropractic techniques depending on the needs of our patients. Below is a list of chiropractic techniques that are often used by our doctors.

Diversified technique- taught at all chiropractic colleges. Diversified is the technique that is most commonly associated with chiropractic.  High Velocity-Low Amplitude adjustments are provided at specific segments of the spine or extremity joints. Often, cracks and pops are experienced with this type of adjustment.

Gonstead technique- specific spinal segment adjusting, typically performed  to a patient that is face down on a table. Like diversified, often results in cracking and popping.

Webster technique- a technique developed to be very effective for pregnant patients

Thompson (drop table) technique- uses a table that drops a short distance when Diversified or Gonstead type adjustments are provided creates the speed with the joint during adjustment. Cracking and popping is less frequent with this technique

Activator technique- uses an instrument that provides a gently but quick impulse.  At Gallatin Valley Chiropractic the doctors employ this technique with patients that are apprehensive about hands-on adjusting, don't want to be cracked and popped, or have osteoprosis or other conditions that may increase risks with hands-on care.

Cox Flexion/Distraction technique- is a hands-on technique that uses a table that mechanically provides motions that are often very effective for disc herniation conditions.

SOT technique- uses angled blocking around the pelvis and gentle manual adjusting

Spinal Decompression/traction- equipment that provides gentle traction to regions of the spine, often very helpful for disc herniation, sciatica, and arthritis

McKenzie technique- uses patient positioning to guide treatment and home care for disc herniation patients

Other techniques or services offered at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic that are not necessarily "chiropractic techniques" include:
