Healthy Eating in Bozeman, Montana

Healthy Eating in Bozeman, Montana

Eating healthy and consciously is more than a trend. Beyond nourishment, the way we eat and what we eat has the power to make real impacts on health and well being, both in the positive and negative direction, depending on the diet.

Many believe that eating foods produced using pesticides or that are genetically modified have potential and significant health consequences; a Google Scholar or Pubmed search reveals associations between pesticide exposure and many conditions including but not limited to birth defects, fertility, gastrointestinal disorders, dermatological conditions, cancer, Alzheimer's, ADHD, autism and more. Research has also verified that organic food is more rich in vitamins and minerals than non-organic or genetically modified counterparts.

Many people that share this concern eat organically farmed foods to avoid health risks associated with pesticides. A great number of people find it financially challenging to eat organically; typically, organic food costs between 10-40% more than non-organically produced foods.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has put together a list (The Clean 15) of foods that are low in pesticides. The beauty behind this list is that people can feel comfortable with not buying these items in their organic variety, saving some money without significantly increasing pesticide consumption.  https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/clean_fifteen_list.php

EWG, also, produces a "Dirty Dozen" list which shows the most pesticide laden foods when testing non-organically produced fruits and vegetables. This is the list of food that you DO want to buy organically if you care about chemicals/pesticides in your food.  https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty_dozen_list.php

We like to encourage conscientious eating; buying and eating from local, known sources is often more beneficial than focusing on organic vs. non-organic.  There are several local farms that offer shares that you can buy in advance and you will receive a sack of local, typically organic, produce weekly.
