Chiropractic and Yoga, a winning combination for managing back and neck pain!

Chiropractic and Yoga:

A winning combination for managing back and neck pain!

0959825001601311437.jpgChiropractic spinal manipulative therapy has been shown to be effective at reducing pain and improving function while being one of the most cost effective forms of care available for low back and neck related conditions.  Plenty of research has demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic as a first choice of care for musculoskeletal conditions. More can be read about this topic in the blog "Who should I see for care?"

While chiropractic may be the ideal first choice in care, especially for spinal conditions, if we have the opportunity to improve outcomes, those opportunities should be explored. Studies show that adding therapeutic exercise to chiropractic care improves outcomes; while other studies have shown specific yoga therapy to be equally as effective as exercises and stretches provided by physical therapists.  In essence, therapeutic yoga can be a wonderful addition to chiropractic treatment for spinal conditions.
Whether using therapeutic exercises or yoga as complementary care to chiropractic, a focus on targeting appropriate muscles, joints and patterns of fascial tension should be addressed. For instance, a recent study demonstrated that core stability exercises are superior for low back rehabilitation compared to "routine physical therapy exercises" when looking at reducing pain and improving function.

Though many therapy exercises and  yoga poses are very similar or even the same, yoga incorporates a mind, breath, body link that has additional benefit. There have been studies showing that yoga reduces stress, helps us manage chronic pain, reduces depression and reduces anxiety. A recent study, published 10/19/2017, demonstrated that yoga in addition to aerobic exercise doubles the effectiveness of exercise alone for reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and waist circumference as well as reducing other significant cardiovascular risk factors.
