It is recommended that all women of child bearing ages take a folic acid supplement. Folic acid, also known as folate, plays a huge role in preventing neural tube defects in infants. The neural tube is what develops into the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid helps with cell production and without it, the neural tube can not develop correctly, resulting with major concerns and health problems for infants.

The recommended amount of Folic acid women of child bearing ages need is at least 400 micrograms (mcg) daily. Women who are trying to get pregnant definitely should get this recommended amount. Women who are already pregnant should get 600 mcg of folic acid and breastfeeding mothers should take 500mcg. The first three months are very critical months when birth defect risks are at their highest and taking care of yourself should be your top priority.

Even for those who are careful with their diet, it is still sometimes hard to get the adequate amount of folic acid. Many foods like pastas, breads, cereals, rice and some other grain products are actually now fortified with folic acid. Other foods such as bananas, nuts, peas, beans, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, and other leafy grains contain higher amounts of folic acid. If you are not getting enough folic acid from these foods, look into taking a supplement especially if you are already pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant in the future.
