Inflammation - Gallatin Valley Chiropractic of Bozeman

When we experience pain, many of us rely on medications or quick fixes to feel better.  But, by incorporating better quality food, and implementing a regular exercise routine, we can decrease or eliminate medications and pain killers taken for daily aches and pains.

Why does inflammation occur?

Inflammation happens as a response from a mechanical injury or infection in the soft tissues of the body. this area of tissue will Medications Chiropractors.jpg

typically become painful, irritated, and swollen. As a result, there is often a loss of range of motion and strength. Chronic inflammation due to repeated injury or poor quality diet, can result in soft tissue irritation, followed by joint dysfunction and arthritis.

The first step to reducing inflammation...

It is common in our office to see patients experiencing the effects of inflammation.  To reduce pain  and joint dysfunction, addition to chiropractic adjustments, reviewing your diet is a great way to start.  The first step to revamping the diet is to eliminate foods that promote and prolong inflammation.  These  include processed foods, and those high in Omega 6 fats. Grain fed beef, and foods high in sodium as well as sugary drinks, breads, sweets, and pastries should also be avoided.

The foods to be chosen instead, are anti-inflammatory foods. Omega-3 fats are healthy fats that can easily be added to the diet with foods such as nuts, seeds, avocado, and olive oil. Achieving a balance of healthy fats and proteins can also be done through eating grass-fed red meats, free-range poultry, and wild-caught fish.

Carbohydrates should come mostly from fruits, vegetables, and starches such as potatoes, rice, and other grains such as couscous and quinoa.

When selecting fruits and vegetables, think color!  The more color the better.  Choosing dark green leafy vegetables and a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables provides minerals, vitamins, and micronutriets critical for health. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains contain fiber, making them an excellent anti-inflammatory food.  High fiber diets are a great way of controlling inflammation.

Choosing beverages wisely is also an important part of an inflammatory diet.  It is best to simply eliminate all juices and sodas from the diet.  Drinking plenty of water is very beneficial. One way to ensure you're getting enough water, is to drink half your body weight (measured in pounds) in ounces each day.

In addition to a healthy diet, there a number of natural herbs and supplements that can also help with inflammation, if you're injured.  These include; Boswellia, White Willow Bark Extract, Gingerroot, and Bromelain.

It is very important to eat a well balanced, healthy diet.  If you want to learn more about implementing a healthy diet, natural supplements, and receiving care that will help control inflammation, the doctors at Gallatin Valley Chiropractic of Bozeman can help!
