Headaches - Gallatin Valley Chiropractic of Bozeman
The vast majority and most common type of headache is know as a tension headache, and account for nearly 90 percent of all headaches. Recently, these headaches are more commonly referred to as cervicogenic headaches, meaning "originating from the cervical spine". These headaches are most often caused by a misalignment of an upper neck vertebrae, usually in combination with multiple trigger points in the neck. When the upper cervical vertebrae, especially the atlas lose their proper motion or are out of alignment, a small muscle called the rectus capitis posterior minor goes into spasm. The major issue with this is that the muscle has a small tendon that attaches onto the thin, pain sensitive dura of the spinal cord. The spasm causes the dura to be stretched beyond its normal tension, which creates a radiating pain up the back of the neck and often around the skull and to the eyes resembling a migraine headache. This is known as a tension or cervicogenic headache!
So what can you do to get rid of these headaches? Simple...with specific chiropractic adjustments from a licensed chiropractor, this dural pressure can be released and the headache can disappear. With the upper cervical vertebrae functioning properly it will release the tension on the problematic muscle causing the headache.
Many people have headaches every day, and just learn to deal with the pain.... do not let this happen to you! Pain is not normal, and is an indicator that something is not right in your body, and it is very important to get it corrected and release the tension off of the nervous system.
