Headaches

Headaches - Gallatin Valley Chiropractic of Bozeman

Tension type headaches account for nearly 90 percent of all headaches seen in a primary care setting. These headaches are often referred to as cervicogenic headaches, meaning "originating from the cervical spine or neck". Most often, these are caused by severe tension in the neck muscles, and accompany in most cases, misalignments and movement dysfunction in the joints in this area.

How Does the Neck Cause Headaches?

When the upper cervical vertebrae move improperly or are out of alignment, small muscles at the base of the skull can go into spasm.  This can create often severe radiating pain up the back of the neck and around the skull and to the eyes, resembling a migraine.

Specific chiropractic adjustments from a licensed chiropractor can release this tension and pressure, which often can immediately alleviate the headache and even prevent them from returning.

Migraines

The pain from a migraine headache comes from a very different source, and is brought on by a very different mechanism than a tension headache. Migraine headaches are brought about by an interruption circulation to the brain, first causing often visual, auditory or speech interruptions, and then a subsequent sudden flood of blood to the brain, which causes stretching of the very pain sensitive brain lining, creating the characteristic pounding, severe headache.

Migraine headaches are different than cervicogenic or tension-type headaches. Migraine headaches often respond well to spinal manipulation, but often require a multimodal approach involving dietary changes, and/or co-treatment with other health care professionals, potentially with medication.
